My Postpartum Skincare Routine

Skincare has been a big topic on Modern Ghosts for the last few years! As with most things, my postpartum skincare routine is very much not as it was before giving birth. I’ve shared some snippets of it over on instagram, but I wanted to write a more detailed update of what’s been working for me here, too.

Postpartum Skincare - Calm Clean Balm from Skin&Tonic/Boostology

After Arlo was born, my skin took a real beating. The combination of no sleep, hormones being all over the place, and the general stress of newborn life alongside lockdown meant that I was suffering from breakouts, sore patches, incredible dryness and a lovely grey, dull complexion. I didn’t do much about it for the first few weeks – my priorities were elsewhere – but after a month or so, I felt like it was time to tackle my postpartum skincare routine.

Morning Postpartum Skincare Routine

Cleanser

I’ve been using this Sukin Gentle Foaming Cleanser* since pregnancy, and I’ve been so happy with it that I continue to use it. It cleanses nicely without leaving my face feeling stripped of moisture, and it’s affordable and easy to find, too.

My postpartum Skincare favourites

Mask

I started incorporating this new-to-me Upcircle mask into my AM routine. I aim for 2-3 times a week, but honestly, I’m lucky if I manage it once a week. This has been a true skin saviour. It’s applied to damp skin and it feels slightly chalky, making me worry that it would be too drying for me at the moment. But once it’s washed off, it leaves me with beautifully soft skin, and it instantly looks more glowy, too! It’s packaged plastic-free, as are most of Upcircle’s products.

Toner

I received this Laponie toner spray a while ago, and I’ve been using it regularly in recent months. While I’ve never found toners to make a huge difference to my skincare results, I find this really refreshing. It also gives me an extra boost of moisture, which my skin desperately needs at the moment! Packaged in a glass bottle with a plastic lid/pump, it’s another product that makes do with minimal plastic.

Botanics 100% Organice Facial Oil

Essential Oil

Because skin can react to stress, I’ve been trying to actively de-stress myself (anyone who knows me in real life is on the floor laughing now). I apply a bit of this Tisserand De-Stress* blend when I remember to – I have no idea if it’s helping my skin, but it smells bloody lovely.

Moisturiser

My final AM postpartum skincare product is moisturiser! I haven’t found one that I love yet, so I’ve been trialling a few different ones. I’m looking for something lightweight but effective, low waste, and ideally with spf, but so far nothing has stood out! If you have recommendations, please leave them in the comments!

PM Postpartum Skincare Routine

First Cleanse

Just like in the morning, I start with the Sukin cleanser. If I’m wearing makeup (rare in times of lockdown), I also use my TALA makeup remover cloth at this stage.

Skincare Routine

Exfoliate

Another Upcircle product, but one that I’ve been using for a long time – their facial coffee scrub! Again, I use this 2-3 times a week, and it helps to remove dead skin cells and brightens my complexion at the same time. This one is packaged in an aluminium tube (one of the most recyclable materials around) with a small plastic cap.

Second Cleanse

I’ve been looking for a balm-like hot cloth cleanser for the second half of my double cleanse for a while. When Boostology offered to send me the Skin&Tonic Calm Clean as a PR sample, I jumped at the chance. It’s an easy product to use, and my skin has calmed down a lot within days of incorporating it into my routine. The smell is something to get used to – it reminds me of an old-school apothecary I once visited in Vienna – but I have to say it’s growing on me. The brand’s entire beauty section is low-waste, and Boostology plant a tree for every order, which I think is a lovely touch.

Tone & Moisturise

Just like the AM routine, I use toner an moisturiser at this stage. I’m debating whether it’s worth investing in separate day and night moisturisers at the moment. I’ve always used the same product in the morning and evening, but as I get older, it might be time to try something more targeted!

Upcircle Face Mask

Facial Oil

I finish up my postpartum skincare routine each evening with a facial oil. I usually buy the Upcircle serum and use that as an oil, but I had this Botanics one* from a previous beauty box and I’ve really been loving it! Bonus that it comes in a glass bottle, so only the pipette has any plastic in it.

I’ve honestly never had so many steps to my skincare regime, but I have to say that it’s working! Please do comment with any low-waste, vegan moisturisers that you like, as I’m still on the lookout for the perfect one!
