We’re three weeks away from the Easter weekend, and while 2021’s Easter Sunday isn’t going to be the family celebration we had all hoped for, that won’t stop us enjoying ALL the chocolate. Vegan Easter eggs can now be found almost everywhere, including supermarkets, discounters, and even your local corner shop if you’re lucky. Where only a few years ago we had to make do with a small number of expensive brands and/or a dark chocolate bunny, we’re now so spoilt for choice that it’s difficult to pick only one. I’ve updated my vegan Easter egg guide to show you the ones that caught my attention in 2021!
When I was growing up, Easter was a big deal. I’m not from a religious family, but Germans take their Easter egg hunts seriously! I remember being so excited, waiting for my parents to come back from the garden to tell me that the Easter Bunny had been. I’d race out the door with my little basket and search high and low to make sure we found every little chocolate treat. We didn’t always manage… and my parents sometimes forgot where they hid things, so I’m always half expecting to stumble across a half-fossilised piece of chocolate when I’m in their garden. Large Easter eggs weren’t (and aren’t) as common as they are in the UK. Instead, we got lots of small chocolate eggs and treats and a large chocolate Easter bunny instead. Once we collected all the chocolate that could be found/remembered, we’d sit down and have an Easter breakfast. This often involved a sweet yeasted bread, called an Osterzopf – which translates as an Easter Ponytail. We Germans are a strange people, as evidenced by our incredible ability to create new words by just stringing more and more nouns together. Bloody good at bread, though.
But I digress. Since I’ve spent nearly a decade on the British Isles now, and large chocolate eggs are very much the main event here, here’s my highlight reel of this year’s vegan Easter eggs. I hope you enjoy one. Or three. In fact, why stop at three? Aim high! Eat them all! Sharing with your household is encouraged, of course, but I won’t judge.
