Vegan & Sustainable Deodorant in the UK

Finding a vegan and sustainable deodorant is pretty hard. Finding one that really properly works has, for some time, felt next to impossible. Fortunately, times are changing and we now have a whole host of affordable and accessible sustainable deodorant options to choose from. The best part? The all really work, and there’s not a single weird crystal stick that you have to run under a tap in sight.

Plastic Free Vegan & Sustainable Deodorant

I’ve always been quite firm that plastic-free products are fantastic, but that plastic-free isn’t the only thing that matters when choosing a sustainable product. There are so many amazing plastic-free deodorant brands out there now though that I just had to put them front and centre of this post!

Marcel’s Green Soap

These cardboard-packaged sticks are highly functional, easy to use and transport, and also just smell really nice. The Netherlands-based brand make a whole range of body and home care products and focus on great scents. Word of warning: the packaging states it’s recyclable, but here in the UK at least paper that’s been contaminated with grease, which all deodorant tubes are, can’t be recycled. Chuck it in your compost bin instead. Marcel’s Green Soap deos are available at Big Green Smile.

Natural Deodorant Co

One of the single best deodorants I’ve ever used, we’ve been buying this for years. They now also do a return scheme for packaging to keep make their zero-waste efforts go even further. Highly recommend the Lemon & Geranium, and definitely try their sensitive range if you’ve struggled with bicarb-based vegan does before. Plus, at the time of writing, the range is 20% off at Ethical Superstore!

Coconut Matter

A previous partner on Moving Scouse, I’ve had the chance to try lots of Coconut Matter products over the past few years. As the name suggests, these are coconut-based deodorant sticks, packaged in cardboard tubes making them easy to travel with. Similar to Marcel’s, you’ll need to compost your packaging rather than recycle it. My favourite is the Spring scent, but Fresh is also a lovely neutral!

Ethique

The New Zealand brand is one you’ve definitely heard of by now, unless you’ve been living under a rock (sounds good, no utility bills). They’re well-known for their shampoo bars, but they’ve got a really wide range of susty products these days, some of which are really innovative. They’re now selling mix-at-home solid concentrates of many of their products, how cool!? Anyway, they also sell a range of vegan and sustainable deodorant bars, which I love the texture of!

Lamazuna

This French zero-waste brand makes a whole host of solid products, including (obviously) deodorant. Using bicarb and coconut oil as a base, the application of Lamazuna’s solid vegan deodorants* is slightly unusual – you run it under water to create a cream before application.

Ben & Anna

Since people are really divided on the whole solid vs. jar vs. stick deodorant, I’ve included a range of all of them in this plastic-free section of the deodorant guide. Ben & Anna* make a range of both jar (well, tin) packaged does, as well as some in stick format. They’re bicarb and shea-based, and come in both scented and unscented versions.

Vegan Refillable Deodorant

Wild

Super high-profile sustainable deodorant brand Wild are available pretty much everywhere at this point. You buy a starter pack, which include a case and a deodorant cartridge, and then just refill the case over and over again. They now come in a range of scents and colours, including coconut and vanilla which I am personally very intrigued by, and MOVINGSCOUSE20 will get you 20% off your first order!

Salt of the Earth

Salt of the Earth have been on the scene for quite a while, but did you know that a lot of their roll ons and sprays are actually refillable? Because I only learned that recently! You can buy large 1l refill bottles, and just keep using the same spray/roll on bottle indefinitely. This is great because those are indefinitely harder to recycle than the plain bottle that the refill comes in.

Organic Vegan & Sustainable Deodorant

Lavera

Flatlay of vegan and sustainable deodorant options

German ‘natural cosmetics’ brand Lavera has been a household staple since my childhood (and I’m super proud to disclaim that they recently gifted me some products, including the deodorant in the post images). They make a range of different types of organic deodorants, including a cream version (sadly not plastic-free), as well as sprays and roll ons in their typical scents. Not all their products are organic and/or vegan, but they’re really clearly labelled on their website.

Weleda

Another original of the German ‘Naturkosmetic’ scene, Weleda* has accompanied me through my entire life, and I regularly use their products for my entire family. They do a range of spray deodorants* with slightly unusual, but really wholesome and pleasant scents, which are also low-plastic. If you’re after a more traditional roll-on, they’ve got those as well!

Nuxe

French brand Nuxe* is one I hadn’t heard of before researching this post. They do a whole range of vegan and organic body care products, all made in France, and they have more traditional roll-ons available as well as balms packaged in plastic-free tins.

Jāsön

Counting 30+ year of experience in the natural beauty sector, Jāsön* create everything from Shampoo to our favourite family suncream to Deodorant*. An easy-to-use traditional stick deodorant, it’s really gentle thanks to the alcohol-free formula. I’m a particular fan of the Aloe Vera version!

Aesop

Definitely amongst the luxury price bracket brands, Aesop specialise in elegantly simple design and effective ingredients. They make a number of different sustainable deodorant options, including sprays and roll-ons, all in their signature brown bottles that look as good on your shelf as they smell on your person.

Sukin

A natural beauty brand that I return to again and again, Sukin* have also entered the deodorant market. Their offering is a simple, vegan spray, free from aluminium and paragons, and scented with fresh citrus, lavender, and vanilla. They’re also a certified carbon-neutral brand.

Green People

Green People have been on the natural beauty scene for quite a long time now, and have in that time developed an extensive range of deodorants. They’re very gentle, so may not suit everyone, but they have a couple of innovative products, including a deodorant aimed especially at young people. They even make a sustainable deodorant for your feet!

Lush

Lush, as we know, are the home of fun sustainable beauty. They’ve made solid deodorants since WAY before solid anything was popular. Over the decades, these have been so popular that they’ve stuck around in their ever-changing range… and I’m personally convinced that they’ve been the blueprint for a lot of solid products on the market these days, too! If solid deodorant isn’t your vibe, they also make the only vegan powder deodorant version I’ve been able to find while researching for this post.

Evolve

Evolve beauty* is receiving a lot of hype for their Miracle Mask at the moment, but did you know they make vegan deodorant* as well, alongside a whole range of other body care products? It’s midrange in terms of price, and won’t break the bank, and contains a decent proportion of organic ingredients. Active ingredients are Shea, coconut, and bicarb, making this an effective formulation with a gentle scent.
